What is a rent receipt app?
A rent receipt app generates a rent receipt when rent is paid and delivers it to the tenant. RentStalk generates a numbered PDF the moment a landlord confirms a payment — with the property, period, rent and electricity split — and sends it on WhatsApp in the tenant's language.
- Generated on payment confirmation, not from a form
- Numbered PDF with landlord, tenant, property and period
- Rent and electricity shown as separate lines
- Delivered to the tenant on WhatsApp automatically
- Any past month retrievable, including after move-out
- Free rent receipt generator available with no account
What the rent receipt app does
Triggered by the payment itself
Confirm cash, UPI or transfer and the receipt exists. See rent tracking.
A numbered, itemised PDF
Landlord, tenant, property, period, amount and receipt number — the HRA fields.
Electricity shown separately
Units and cost on their own line. See rental billing.
Every past month retrievable
Ask for any month, even a year later, even after the tenant has moved out.
In the tenant's language
English, Hindi, Hinglish, Haryanvi, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Kannada.
One-off receipts too
No account needed for the free rent receipt generator.
A generator is a form. An app knows the payment happened.
Most things called a rent receipt app are really receipt generators: a form where someone types a name, an amount and a month, and a PDF comes out. It will produce a receipt for rent that was never paid, because it has no idea whether it was.
That is fine for a one-off — which is why we keep a free generator for exactly that. But it is not what a landlord with tenants needs every month. If the receipt is not attached to the payment record, someone still has to remember to make it, and the month it gets forgotten is the month a tenant needs it.
How RentStalk compares
| RentStalk | Online receipt generators | Property-management suites | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What triggers it | Payment confirmation | You fill a form | Payment, if recorded in the suite |
| Tenant installs | Nothing — WhatsApp | Nothing | A tenant app, usually |
| Delivery to tenant | Automatic on WhatsApp | You download and send it | In-app or email |
| Electricity itemised | Yes, with units | Only if you type it | Varies |
| Past receipts | Any month, on request | Whatever you saved | Yes, in the dashboard |
| Languages | Seven Indian languages | Usually English | Usually English |
| Best for | Landlords with tenants on record | A single receipt, right now | Agencies with staff and process |
Generators are genuinely better when you need one receipt and nothing else — no account, no setup. Suites are better once you have staff, roles and accounting to run. RentStalk is for the landlord in between, who wants the receipt to happen without being managed.
Why tenants ask for receipts, and why it goes wrong
Most rent receipt requests arrive in January, when employers collect HRA proof. A tenant needs twelve months at once, often for a year that is already over, sometimes for a house they have left. The landlord then reconstructs a year of payments from memory and a WhatsApp scrollback.
When each receipt was made at the moment of payment, that January request is a single question with an immediate answer. Nothing is reconstructed, because nothing was ever missing.
How a receipt gets made
Confirm the payment on WhatsApp
The tenant pays by cash, UPI or transfer and tells the agent. You confirm it — that confirmation is what makes the receipt real rather than a form someone filled in.
The receipt is generated immediately
A numbered PDF with the landlord and tenant names, the property, the period covered, the rent and electricity split, and the amount paid.
It reaches the tenant on its own
The receipt goes to the tenant on WhatsApp in the language they read. Nobody has to remember to send it, and nobody has to ask for it.
Every past receipt stays available
Ask for any month and it comes back — useful when a tenant needs a year of receipts for an HRA claim long after they have moved out.
Stop making receipts by hand
Confirm the payment on WhatsApp. The receipt is written, numbered and delivered without you.
Rent receipt questions
What is a rent receipt app?
A rent receipt app generates a proper rent receipt when rent is paid — with the landlord and tenant names, the property, the period, the amount and a receipt number — and delivers it to the tenant. RentStalk generates one automatically the moment you confirm a payment, and sends it on WhatsApp.
Is a rent receipt generator the same as a rent receipt app?
No, and the difference matters. A generator is a form: you type the details and it produces a PDF, whether or not the payment happened. An app knows the payment happened, because it holds the rent record. RentStalk offers both — a free rent receipt generator for one-off use, and automatic receipts for landlords whose rent cycle already runs on it.
Do I need a revenue stamp on a rent receipt?
For cash payments above ₹5,000 a revenue stamp is customary in India and some employers insist on it. It is not needed for bank, UPI or cheque payments, where the transaction itself is the trail. Employer HRA policies vary, so check what yours asks for.
Can a tenant get rent receipts for HRA claims?
Yes. Every receipt carries the landlord's name, the property address, the period and the amount — the fields an employer's HRA process asks for. A tenant can ask the agent for any past month, including after they have moved out.
Is the rent receipt app free?
Receipts are included, with no per-receipt charge. The free rent receipt generator is open to anyone without an account at all.
Does the receipt show electricity separately?
Yes. Where the bill includes electricity worked out from meter readings, the receipt shows the rent and the electricity as separate lines with the units consumed, so the tenant can see exactly what they paid for.
