How do I collect rent by UPI?
Give RentStalk your UPI ID or upload your UPI QR once, and it is attached to every rent bill and reminder you send. The tenant scans or taps and pays from GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or their bank app, reports the payment on WhatsApp, and you confirm it — the receipt is then sent automatically. The money moves directly from the tenant to your account.
- Set up once — a UPI ID or a QR image, either is enough
- Attached to every bill and every reminder automatically
- Tenant pays from any UPI app; nothing to install
- Money goes to your account — RentStalk never holds it
- No mandate, no auto-debit, no payment gateway cut
- Receipt issued the moment you confirm the payment

The question every tenant asks
"Kahan bhejun?" — where do I send it? It gets asked every month, by the same tenants, and every month somebody digs out a QR screenshot and forwards it again. With four tenants that is a minor irritation. With forty it is a part-time job.
Setting your UPI details once ends that conversation. The bill itself answers the question, in the same message that says how much is due.
This is not autopay, and that is the point
Rent products often sell automatic collection: the tenant authorises a recurring debit and the money is pulled each month. It works beautifully in a deck. In practice it asks a tenant to install an app, finish a signup and approve a mandate — and the tenant who pays by UPI or in cash is never going to complete all three.
So nothing here is auto-debited. The bill arrives with your payment details on it, the tenant pays the way they already pay, and the only thing that changed is that they did not have to ask you for the QR. If the rent is the same every month, the bill itself can be automatic — the payment stays a decision the tenant makes.
Paid is a word only you get to use
The tenant reports the payment, and can attach a screenshot. That marks the bill as awaiting confirmation — not as paid. Nothing is settled until you say the money reached your account.
It sounds like a small distinction until you have had a screenshot of a failed transaction. A record that counts intentions as income is worse than no record, because you will trust it. Once you do confirm, the receipt is sent and the amount is written into your income statement for the month.
A QR image or a UPI ID
Either is enough, and you can change it whenever you like. A UPI ID is faster to set up and simple to copy. A QR image is what most people are used to pointing a camera at, and it is the better choice if your tenants are older or less comfortable typing a payment address.
Whichever you choose travels with the bill from then on, which means a tenant who has lost the message from last month does not need to come back to you for it.
How UPI rent collection works
Add your UPI ID or your QR once
Send the agent your UPI ID, or upload the QR image your bank or payment app already gave you. One of the two is enough, and you only do it once.
It rides along with every bill
From then on each rent bill and each reminder carries your payment details, so the tenant never has to ask "where do I send it?".
The tenant pays from the app they already use
They scan or tap and pay from GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or their bank app. Nothing to install, no account on anything new.
They tell you it is paid
The tenant reports the payment on WhatsApp and can attach the screenshot. The bill moves to awaiting your confirmation.
You confirm, and the receipt goes out
Once you confirm the money reached your account, the receipt is generated and sent, and the amount is written to your income record.
Stop forwarding your QR every month
Add your UPI details once and every bill carries them, with the money going straight to your account.
UPI rent collection FAQs
How do I collect rent by UPI from my tenants?
Give RentStalk your UPI ID or upload your UPI QR once. Every rent bill and reminder that goes out afterwards carries it, so the tenant can pay straight from GPay, PhonePe, Paytm or their bank app. They report the payment, you confirm it, and the receipt is sent automatically.
Does RentStalk take the rent money?
No. The money goes from your tenant to your own UPI account, exactly as it would if you had sent them the QR yourself. RentStalk never holds your rent, never routes it through a payment gateway and takes no cut of it. What it does is make sure the request reaches the tenant with your details on it, and that the payment gets recorded once you confirm it.
Is this the same as autopay or a mandate?
No, and the difference matters for Indian rentals. Autopay needs the tenant to install something, complete a signup and approve a recurring debit — which most tenants paying by UPI or cash will never finish. Here nothing is auto-debited. The bill arrives with your QR, the tenant chooses to pay, and that is the whole flow.
UPI ID or QR image — which should I use?
Either works, and you only need one. A UPI ID is quicker to set up and easy to copy. A QR image is what most tenants are used to scanning, and it is the one to pick if your tenants are more comfortable with a camera than with typing an address. You can replace whichever you set later.
How do I know the tenant actually paid?
You confirm it. The tenant reports the payment and can attach proof, but nothing is marked paid until you say the money arrived in your account. A tool that marked a bill paid on the tenant's word alone would be recording hope rather than rent.
Does the tenant need an app for this?
No. The bill, the QR and the reminders all arrive on WhatsApp, and the payment happens in whichever UPI app they already have. There is nothing to download and no account to create.
